Melbourne’s masterful exponents of Brazilian repertoire…

Dany Maia voice | Jacqueline Gawler voice | Yael Zamir flute | Matt Boden piano | Jorge Albuquerque bass | Alastair Kerr musical director / drums & percussion

Panorama Brasil draws on the diverse musical landscape of Brazil: music from the bars and clubs of Rio, from the streets of Salvador, and from Brazil’s rich folkloric history. Experience the sophistication of bossa nova, MPB, and Brazilian jazz, alongside the earthy sounds of samba, and Brazil’s incredible regional styles.

‘The band launched straight into the heady syncopations of the maracatu from Recife, transporting us immediately into the alternative reality of a wild, intensely colourful carnival, about as far removed from Adelaide in winter as you can get.’  Stephen Wittington, Adelaide Advertiser

Based in Melbourne Australia, Panorama Brasil is equally at home in jazz clubs, concert halls and street festivals. The core ensemble is fronted by Brazilian singer Dany Maia and Australian jazz singer Jacqueline Gawler, and is augmented by a stellar cast of special guests, including Brazilian singer Alda Rezende, guitar virtuoso Doug de Vries and Australian jazz icon Vince Jones.

Effortlessly fluid vocals...’  Jessica Nicholas, The Age

‘Drummer/percussionist and Brazilian music aficionado, Alastair Kerr, and world-class Brazilian/jazz style guitarist, Doug de Vries, are the musical directors of Jobim. With their beautiful band Panorama Brasil, these wonderful musicians deliciously opened the evening before inviting Brazilian chanteuse Alda Rezende to the stage.’ Nikki Fort, The Clothesline

Over the past decade, Panorama Brasil has performed at major festivals including the Melbourne International Jazz Festival (with Vince Jones), Stonnington Jazz (with Doug de Vries), and Adelaide Cabaret Festival (with Vince Jones and Alda Rezende). They have presented many major concerts dedicated to the works of great Brazilian artists, including: Jobim (Adelaide Cabaret Festival); Baden Powell’s Os Afro Sambas (touring with Alda Rezende); Clube da Esquina (Melbourne Recital Centre); and the ongoing series Brazil’s Modern Poets (music from Brazil’s leading songwriters post-1970) at Melbourne Recital Centre.

‘The backbone of this show is Panorama Brasil, the amazing outfit put together by percussionist Alastair Kerr...a dream combo to deliver the sounds of Jobim.’  Tracey Korsten, Glam Adelaide

Jacqueline Gawler led the first set with a sultry and soulful performance, rich in the breathlessness that can only be found in Brazilian love songs.’ Beattopia Melbourne

Panorama Brasil have released three acclaimed albums: The Archer & the Dancer, Flor de Pedra, and Chant/Call: Stories of the Gods. The ensemble has also collaborated with Brazilian choreographer/dancer Fabiana Grimaldi in concerts, and together they are developing a new Afro-Brazilian ballet – Oxossi: The Hunter. Drummer/composer and Musical Director of the ensemble Alastair Kerr is a long-time student of Brazilian music and recognised as one of Australia's leading exponents of Brazilian percussion and drumming. Alastair has performed and recorded with many leading Brazilian musicians, both in Australia and Brazil, including Paulo Aragão, Hermeto Pascoal, Assanhado Quarteto, Anna Setton, and Marvio Ciribelli. Alastair holds a PhD from the University of Melbourne, for which he researched the music of the Afro-Brazilian religion, Candomblé.

2024 sees the ensemble launch a brand new collaboration with Orchestra Victoria for the Melbourne International Jazz Festival at Melbourne’s premier concert venue Hamer Hall. ‘Rhapsody In Blue’ features Grammy award-winning pianist from Japan Makoto Ozone - performing Gershwin and Corea material - while Panorama Brasil artists bring Antonio Carlos Jobim’s masterpieces to life with full orchestral arrangements by Alastair Kerr and Matt Boden.

    VOICE

There is a Brazilian expression that says: 'A Baiana is not born, a Baiana debuts,' and a better one: 'What is it this Baiana has got?’ Dany Maia, a true Baiana hailing from the vibrant state of Bahia in northeastern Brazil, embodies these words in every aspect of her musical journey. From her early debut in the music industry to her captivating performances on Australian stages, Dany brings the essence of her homeland and the soul of Brazilian rhythms to audiences far and wide.
